  1. Settest thou, round about, the sacrifice a-flare?
  2. For, of all gods the city-swaying,
  3. Those supernal, those infernal,
  4. Those of the fields’, those of the mart’s obeying, —
  5. The altars blaze with gifts;
  6. And here and there, heaven-high the torch uplifts
  7. Flame-medicated with persuasions mild,
  8. With foul admixture unbeguiled —
  9. Of holy unguent, from the clotted chrism
  10. Brought from the palace, safe in its abysm.
  11. Of these things, speaking what may be indeed
  12. Both possible and lawful to concede,
  13. Healer do thou become! — of this solicitude
  14. Which, now, stands plainly forth of evil mood,
  15. And, then . . . but from oblations, hope, to-day
  16. Gracious appearing, wards away
