“Καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς Χαρρὰν, καὶ ἀπήντησε τόπῳ, καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἐκεῖ· ἔδυ γὰρ ὁ ἥλιος. καὶ ἔλαβεν ἀπὸ τῶν λίθων, καὶ ἔθηκε πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὑτοῦ, καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ἐκείνῳ, καὶ ἐνυπνιάσθη· καὶ ἰδοὺ κλῖμαξ ἐστηριγμένη εἰς τὴν γῆν, ἧς ἡ κεφαλὴ ἀφικνεῖτο εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν, καὶ οἶ ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ ἀνέβαινον καὶ κατέβαινον ἐπ’ αὐτήν. ὁ δὲ κύριος ἐπεστήρικτο ἐπ’ αὐτῆς, καὶ εἶπεν, ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ τοῦ πατρός σου, καὶ ὁ θεὸς Ἰσαὰκ, μὴ φοβοῦ· ἡ γῆ ἐφ’ ἣν σὺ καθεύδεις ἐπ’ αὐτὴν, σοὶ δώσω αὐτὴν καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου.

καὶ ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα σου ὡς ἡ ἄμμος τῆς θαλάσσης, καὶ πλατυνθήσεται ἐπὶ θάλασσαν καὶ ἀνατολὰς καὶ ἐπὶ βορρᾶν καὶ λίβα· καὶ ἐνευλογηθήσονται ἐν σοὶ πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἐν τῷ σπέρματί σου. καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγώ εἰμι μετὰ σοῦ, διαφυλάσσων σε ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ πάση, οὑ ἂν πορευθῇς, καὶ ἀποστρέψω σε εἰς τὴν γῆν ταύτην, ὅτι οὐ μή σε ἐγκαταλίπω, ἴως τοῦ ποιῆσαί με πάντα ὅσα ἐλάλησά σοι.

ὕπνου αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐστὶ κύριος ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ, ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ ᾔδειν. καὶ ἐφοβήθη, καὶ εἷπεν, ὡς φοβερὸς ὁ τόπος οὗτος. οὐκ ἔστι τοῦτο ἀλλ’ ἢ οἶκος θεοῦ, καὶ αὕτη ἡ πύλη τοὐ οὐρανοῦ. καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰακὼβ τὸ πρωῒ, καὶ ἔλαβε τὸν λίθον, ὃν ὑπέθηκε πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔστησεν αὐτὸν στήλην, καὶ ἐπέχεεν ἔλαιον ἐπὶ τὸ ἄκρον αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἰακὼβ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου, οἶκος θεοῦ.”

Τοῦτον τὸν ἐνταῦθα διὰ τοσούτων χρηματίζοντα κύριον καὶ θεὸν ἄγγελον τοῦ θεοῦ προϊὼν ἐξῆς εὑρήσεις, ἐν οἷς φησι πρὸς τὰς γυναῖκας αὐτὸς Ἰακὼβ “καὶ εἶπέ μοι ὁ ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ καθ’ ὕπνον, Ιακὼβ· ἐγὼ δὲ εἶπα, τί ἐστι;” καὶ ἐξῆς ἑώρακα, φησὶ, πάντα ὅσ’ ἁ λαβὰν σοὶ ποιεῖ. ἐγὼ ὁ θεὸς ὁ ὀφθείς σοι ἐν τόπῳ, οὑ ἤλειψάς μοι ἐκεῖ στήλην, καὶ ηὔξω μοι εὐχήν.”

Ἄρ᾿ οὖν ὁ ἀνωτέρω φήσας ‘ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ τοῦ πατρός σου, καὶ ὁ θεὸς Ἰσαὰκ,” ᾧ καὶ στήλην ἀνίστησιν ὁ θεοφιλὴς, θεὸς μὶν ἦν καὶ κύριος· αὐτῷ γὰρ λέγοντι πιστευτέον· οὐ μὴν ὁ ἐπὶ πάντων, ἀλλ’ ὁ ἐκείνου δεύτερος, τὰ τοῦ πατρὸς εἰς ἀνθρώπους διακονούμενος καὶ διαγγέλλων.

διὸ καὶ ἄγγελον αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰακὼβ ἐπὶ τοῦ παρόντος καλεῖ εἶπέ μοι ὁ ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ φάσκων καθ’ ὕπνον, ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ θεὸς ὁ ὀφθείς σοι ἐν τῷ τόπῳ.” οὐκοῦν ὁ αὐτὸς ἄγγελος κυρίου καὶ θεὸς καὶ κύριος σαφῶς διὰ τούτων ἀνηγόρευται. καὶ ἐν Ἠσαίᾳ δὲ τῷ προφήτῃ φήτῃ μεγάλης βουλῆς ἄγγελος, ὁμοῦ δὲ καὶ θεὸς καὶ ἄρχων καὶ ἐξουσιαστὴς προσαγορεύεται, ἐν οἶς τὴν εἰς ἀνθρώπους αὐτοῦ γένεσιν θεσπίζει λέγων ‟ὅτι [*](12 Gen. 31, 11.)

παιδίον ἐγενήθη ἡμῖν, καὶ υἱὸς ἐδόθη ἡμῖν, οὗ ἡ ἀρχὴ ἐπὶ τοῦ ὤμου αὐτοῦ, καὶ καλεῖται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ μεγάλης βουλῆς ἄγγελος, ἄρχων εἰρήνης, θεὸς ἰσχυρὸς, ἐξουσιαστὴς, πατὴρ τοῦ μέλλοντος αἰῶνος.
