(Καρυᾶτις), a surname of Artemis, derived from the town of Caryae in Laconia. Here the statue of the goddess stood in the open air, and maidens celebrated a festival to her every year with dances. (Paus. 3.10.8, 4.16.5 ; Serv. ad Virg. Eclog. 8.30.)
