1. Of ANTIOCH, a Stoic philosopher, was a friend of Ariston of Chios, on whom he wrote a work called Ἀρίστων. (Athen. 7.281.) Diogenes Laertius (7.140, comp. 92) mentions a work of his called φυσική His name also occurs in Tertullian. (De Anim. 14.) Some writers have asserted, though without any good reason, that Apollophanes the Stoic was the same as Apollophanes the physician who lived at the court of Antiochus. A later Stoic philosopher of this name occurs in Socrates (Hist. Eccl. 6.19) and in Suidas. (s. v. Ὠριγένης; comp. Ruhnken, Dissert. de Vita et Script. Longini, sect. vii.)
