      with Titus Tatius [<hi rend="smallcaps">VALERIA</hi>
      <hi rend="smallcaps">GENS</hi>].</p><p>The name afterwards became a cognomen in the Valeria gens. Thus we read of M. <hi rend="smallcaps">VALERIUS</hi>
      <hi rend="smallcaps">VOLUSUS</hi>, the brother of Publicola, who was consul <date when-custom="-505">B. C. 505</date>, the fifth year of the republic, with P. Postumius Tubertus. He fought,
      together with his colleague, against the Sabines, and obtained a triumph on account of his
      victory over them. He fell at the battle of the Lake Regillus, <date when-custom="-498">B. C.
       498</date> or 496 (<bibl n="Liv. 2.16">Liv. 2.16</bibl>, <bibl n="Liv. 2.20">20</bibl>; <bibl n="Dionys. A. R. 5.37">Dionys. A. R. 5.37</bibl> ; <bibl n="Plut. Publ. 20">Plut. Publ.
       20</bibl>). We also read of another brother of Publicola, v. who bore the same cognomen,
      namely, M'. <hi rend="smallcaps">VALERIUS</hi>
      <hi rend="smallcaps">VOLUSUS</hi>
      <hi rend="smallcaps">MAXIMUS</hi>, who was dictator in <date when-custom="-494">B. C. 494</date>,
      and to whom the family of the Valerii Maximi traced their origin. [<ref target="maximus-valerius-bio-1">MAXIMUS</ref>, p. 1001a.] It may be, however, that a mistake
      has been made in the Annals, and that <hi rend="ital">Manius,</hi> the dictator, was the same
      person as <hi rend="ital">Marcus,</hi> the consul : his praenomen would have been changed,
      because it was stated in some of the Annals that the consul fell at the battle of the Lake
      Regillus. Volusus likewise occurs as a praenomen of one of the Valerii Potiti. [<hi rend="smallcaps">POTITUS</hi>, No. 3.] At a later period the name was revived in the Valeria
      gens, and was borne as an agnomen by L. Valerius Messalla, who was consul <date when-custom="5">A.
