         <surname full="yes">Pompo'nius</surname></persName></label></head><p>was proconsul of Africa, and was accused by the provincials in the reign of Nero, <date when-custom="58">A. D. 58</date>, but he was acquitted in consequence of his being an old man
      possessing <pb n="827"/> great wealth and no children (<bibl n="Tac. Ann. 13.52">Tac. Ann.
       13.52</bibl>). This Pomponius Silvanus is perhaps the same as the Pompeius or Poppaeus
      Silvanus mentioned above, as the names are frequently confounded, and the latter is described
      by Tacitus (<bibl n="Tac. Hist. 2.86">Tac. Hist. 2.86</bibl>) as rich and aged.</p></div></div></body></text></TEI>
