This gens was of great antiquity, and one of its members, A.
      Sempronius Atratinus, obtained the consulship as early as <date when-custom="-497">B. C. 497</date>,
      twelve years after the foundation of the republic. The Sempronii were divided into many
      families, of which the <hi rend="smallcaps">ATRATINI</hi> were undoubtedly patrician, but all
      the others appear to have been plebeian : their names are <hi rend="smallcaps">ASELLIO</hi>,
       <hi rend="smallcaps">BLAESUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">DENSUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">GRACCHUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">LONGUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">MUSCA</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">PITIO</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">RUFUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">RUTILUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">SOPHUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">TUDITANUS</hi>. Of
      these, <hi rend="ital">Atratinus, Gracchus,</hi> and <hi rend="ital">Pitio</hi> alone occur on
      coins. The glory of the Sempronia gens is confined to the republican period. Very few persons
      of this name, and none of them of any importance, are mentioned under the empire.</p></div></div></body></text></TEI>
