        <surname full="yes">Osto'rius</surname></persName></label></head><p>1. <persName xml:lang="la"><forename full="yes">P.</forename><surname full="yes">Scapula</surname><addName full="yes">Ostorius</addName></persName>, succeeded A. Plautius as governor of Britain, about
       <date when-custom="50">A. D. 50</date>, with the title of propraetor. He had previously held the
      consulship, and his name is inserted in some of the Fasti as consul suffectus in <date when-custom="46">A. D. 46</date>. He is characterised by Tacitus as <hi rend="ital">bello
       egregius,</hi> and carried on the war with success against several of the British tribes.
      Among others, he defeated the powerful tribe of the Silures, took prisoner their king
      Caractacus, and sent him in chains to Rome [<hi rend="smallcaps">CARACTACUS</hi>]. In
      consequence of this success he received the insignia of a triumph, but died soon afterwards in
