      Brutulus is mentioned, who endeavoured to persuade his countrymen to renew the struggle
      against the Romans, in <date when-custom="-322">B. C. 322</date> [<hi rend="smallcaps">BRUTULUS</hi>], and in the great Social War, <date when-custom="-90">B. C. 90</date>, Papius
      Mutilus was the leader of the Samnites against Rome [<hi rend="smallcaps">MUTILUS</hi>]. Some
      of the Papii probably settled at Rome soon after this event, and one of them finally obtained
      the consulship in <date when-custom="9">A. D. 9</date>. The Roman Papii were divided into two
      families, the <title>Celsi</title> and <title>Mutili:</title> the former are given under <hi rend="smallcaps">CELSUS</hi>, the latter are spoken of under <hi rend="smallcaps">PAPIUS</hi></p></div></div></body></text></TEI>
