      surrendered voluntarily to <ref target="alexander-the-great-bio-1">Alexander</ref>, and was
      treated by him with great distinction. After the battle of Gaugamela (<date when-custom="-331">B. C.
       331</date>) <ref target="alexander-the-great-bio-1">Alexander</ref> appointed him satrap of
