      mentioned by Xenophon (<bibl n="Xen. Hell. 1.1.10">Xenoph. Hell. 1.1.10</bibl>), as having
      been taken prisoner in Caria, but by whom, and on what occasion, does not appear, unless it
      was (according to the suggestion of Weiske) in the unsuccessful expedition of the Athenians to
      Caria and Lycia, under Melesander, in <date when-custom="-430">B. C. 430</date>. (<bibl n="Thuc. 2.69">Thuc. 2.69</bibl>.) Mantitheus was the companion of Alcibiades in his escape,
      in <date when-custom="-411">B. C. 411</date>, from Sardis, where Tissaphernes had confined him (Xen.
       <hi rend="ital">l.c.</hi> ; <bibl n="Plut. Alc. 27">Plut. Alc. 27</bibl>, <bibl n="Plut. Alc. 28">28</bibl>). In <date when-custom="_408">B. C. 408</date> he was one of the
      ambassadors sent from Athens to Dareius; but he and his colleagues were delivered, on their
      way through Asia Minor, by Pharnabazus to Cyrus, who had come down with instructions from his
