      members obtained any of the higher offices of the state. Under the republic we find the
      cognomens <hi rend="smallcaps">BALBUS</hi> and <hi rend="smallcaps">BASSUS</hi>, and under the
      empire <hi rend="smallcaps">CAPITO</hi> and <hi rend="smallcaps">LONGUS.</hi> On coins we find
      the cognomen <hi rend="ital">Rufus,</hi> which does not, however, occur in any ancient writer
      (Eckhel, vol. v. p. 239). A few persons of the name of Lucilius are mentioned without any
