        <surname full="yes">Ca'ssius</surname></persName></label></head><p>10. <persName xml:lang="la"><forename full="yes">C.</forename><surname full="yes">Cassius</surname><addName full="yes">Longinus</addName><addName full="yes">Varus</addName></persName>, of uncertain descent, was consul <date when-custom="-73">B. C.
       73</date>, with M. Terentius Varro Lucullus. In order to quiet the people, the consuls of
      this year brought forward a law (<hi rend="ital">lex Terentia Cassia</hi>) by which corn was
      to be purchased and then sold in Rome at a small price. (<bibl n="Cic. Ver. 1.23">Cic. Ver.
       1.23</bibl>, 3.41.) In the following year Longinus commanded as proconsul in Cisalpine Gaul,
      and was defeated by Spartacus near Mutina, but was not killed in the battle, as Orosius
      states. (<bibl n="Liv. Epit. 96">Liv. Epit. 96</bibl>; <bibl n="Flor. 3.20">Flor. 3.20</bibl>;
       <bibl n="Plut. Crass. 9">Plut. Crass. 9</bibl>; <bibl n="Oros. 5.24">Oros. 5.24</bibl>.) In
       <date when-custom="-66">B. C. 66</date> he supported the Manilian law for giving the command of the
      Mithridatic war to Pompey. (Cic. <hi rend="ital">pro Leg. Man.</hi> 23.) <hi rend="ital">He</hi> must have lived to a very advanced age: the consular Varus, who was proscribed and
      killed at Millturnae in <date when-custom="-43">B. C. 43</date>, can have been no other than the
