      as proconsul in Spain, where he remained for eleven years, and on his return was not allowed
      more than an ovation, because he only held proconsular rank. (<bibl n="Liv. 28.38">Liv.

      which he obtained the year after his return, <date when-custom="-199">B. C. 199</date>; and the year
      after that he was proconsul in Gaul.
