An Athenian, a celebrated soothsayer and interpreter of oracles. Cratinus satirized him
      in his comedy entitled <title xml:lang="grc">Δραπετίδες</title> (Meineke, <hi rend="ital">Fragm. Com.</hi> ii. ]. p. 42, 51). Aristophanes also alludes to him (<hi rend="ital">Av.</hi> 521, 988). Plutarch (<bibl n="Plut. Per. 6">Plut. Per. 6</bibl>) has a story of his
      foretelling the ascendancy of Pericles over Thucydides and his' party. In <date when-custom="-444">B. C. 444</date>, Lampon, in conjunction with Xenocritus, led the colony which founded
      Thurii on the site of the ancient Sybaris. (<bibl n="Diod. 12.10">Diod. 12.10</bibl>; Schol.
       <hi rend="ital">ad Aristoph. Nub.</hi> 331, <hi rend="ital">Av.</hi> 521, <hi rend="ital">Pax,</hi> 1083; Suidas, <hi rend="ital">s. v.</hi>
      <foreign xml:lang="grc">Δουριομάντεις</foreign>.) The name Lampon is found amongst those
      who took the oaths to the treaty of peace made between the Athenians and Lacedaemonians in
       <date when-custom="-421">B. C. 421</date>. (<bibl n="Thuc. 5.19">Thuc. 5.19</bibl>, <bibl n="Thuc. 5.24">24</bibl>.) Whether this was the soothsayer of that name, or not, we have no
