Of <hi rend="smallcaps">GAZA</hi>, a Neo-Platonic philosopher, the friend of Proclus and
      Marinus, whom he succeeded as chief of the school. He again retired, however, into private
      life. His wife, according to Suidas (<hi rend="ital">s. v.</hi>
      <foreign xml:lang="grc">Ὑπατία</foreign>), was Hypatia, herself also celebrated in the
      history of philosophy; but it seems doubtful whether Suidas has not committed an anachronism
      in this statement. (Wernsdorf, <hi rend="ital">Dissert.</hi> iv. <hi rend="ital">de Hypatia,
       philosopha Alexandrina;</hi>
      <hi rend="smallcaps">HYPATIA.</hi>) His mother, Theodote, was also one of a family of
      philosophers, being the sister of Aegyptus, the friend of Hermeias. (Suid. <hi rend="ital">s.
       v.</hi>
