He
      therefore recommended the son of Hippius, C. Valgius Hippianus, who had been adopted by a
      member of the Valgian family, and had purchased a portion of the demesne of Fregellae, to the
      magistrates of that town. (<bibl n="Cic. Fam. 13.76">Cic. Fam. 13.76</bibl>.) This letter
      conveys indirectly some curious information. Fregellae, once the chief town of a considerable
      district, became a Roman colony in <date when-custom="-328">B. C. 328</date>. (<bibl n="Liv. 8.22">Liv. 8.22</bibl>; <bibl n="Strabo v.p.238">Strab. v. p.238</bibl>.) In <pb n="480"/>
      <date when-custom="-122">B. C. 122</date>-<date when-custom="-121">121</date> it was destroyed by the
      praetor, L. Opimius (Rhet. <hi rend="ital">ad Herenn. iv.</hi> 9; Vell. 2.6; <bibl n="V. Max. 2.8">V. Max. 2.8</bibl>); and in the age of Augustus it was little more than an
      open village (Strab. <hi rend="ital">l.c.;</hi>
      <bibl n="Plin. Nat. 3.5">Plin. Nat. 3.5</bibl>). But Cicero's letter (<hi rend="ital">l.c.</hi>) shows that it retained its demesne-land and its full complement of local
