      one of the secretaries of Alexis I. [<hi rend="smallcaps">ALEXISH</hi> or <hi rend="smallcaps">ALEXIUS</hi> I. <hi rend="smallcaps">COMNENUS</hi>], when he besieged Constantinople (<date when-custom="1081">A. D. 1081</date>), in his struggle to wrest the crown from his predecessor, the
      emperor Nicephorus III. Botaniates. He was a crafty far-seeing man, apt at finding excuses for
      the delay of anything which the interest of his master required to be deferred. Anna Comnena
      forced from his name a verb (<foreign xml:lang="grc">μαγγανεύεσθαι</foreign> or <foreign xml:lang="grc">μαγκανεύεσθαι</foreign>) denoting " to find excuses ;" and a noun (<foreign xml:lang="grc">μαγγάνενμα</foreign>) denoting " a pretext."
