      greater number of illustrious men than any other house at Rome. All its great families
      belonged to the patrician order. The names of the patrician families are :--<hi rend="smallcaps">ARVINA</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">BLASIO</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">CETHEGUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">CINNA</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">COSSUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">DOLABELLA</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">LENTULUS</hi> (with the agnomens <hi rend="ital">Caudinus, Clodianus, Crus, Gaetulicus, Lupus, Maluginensis, Marcellins, Niger,
       Rufinus, Scipio, Spinther, Sura</hi>), <hi rend="smallcaps">MALUGINENSIS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">MAMMULA</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">MERENDA</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">MERULA</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">RUFINUS</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">SCAPULA</hi>, <hi rend="smallcaps">SCIPIO</hi> (with the agnomens <hi rend="ital">Africanus, Asiaticus, Asina,
       Barbatus, Calvus, Hipallus, Nasica, Serapio</hi>), <hi rend="smallcaps">SISENNA</hi>, and <hi rend="smallcaps">SULLA</hi> (with the agnomen <hi rend="ital">Felix</hi>). The names of the
      plebeian families are <hi rend="smallcaps">BALBUS</hi> and <hi rend="smallcaps">GALLUS</hi>,
      and we also find various cognomens, as <hi rend="ital">Chrysogonus, Culleolus, Phagita,</hi>
      &amp;c., given to freedmen of this gens. There are also several plebeians mentioned without
      any surname : of these an account is given under <hi rend="smallcaps">CORNELIUS.</hi> The
      following cognomens occur on coins of this gens:--<hi rend="ital">Balbus, Blasio, Cethegus,
       Cinna, Lentulus, Scipio, Sisenna, Sulla.</hi> Under the empire the number of cognomens
