      No. 9. He derived his surname from his attention to naval affairs. (Senec. <hi rend="ital">de
       Brev. Vitae,</hi> 13.) He was elected consul <date when-custom="-264">B. C. 264</date>, and
      commanded the forces sent to the assistance of the Mamertini. He effected a landing on the
      coast of Sicily by night, defeated Hiero and the Carthaginians, and raised the siege of
      Messana. After a repulse from Egesta, and some other unsuccessful operations, he left a
