His history
      and place of birth are unknown. He is mentioned by Hesychius (<hi rend="ital">s. u.</hi>
      <foreign xml:lang="grc">Σαμβύκη</foreign>), by Heron Junior (<hi rend="ital">de Mach.
       Bell.</hi> prooem), and perhaps by Aelian (<hi rend="ital">Tact.</hi> 100.1), under the name
      of <hi rend="ital">*Bi/wn.</hi></p><div><head>Works</head><div><head><foreign xml:lang="grc">κατασκευαὶ πολεμικῶν ὀργάνων κὰ
        καταπελτικῶν</foreign></head><p>The treatise consists of descriptions-- <list type="simple"><item>1. Of a <foreign xml:lang="grc">πετρόβολον</foreign>, or machine for throwing
          stones, made at Rhodes by Charon the Magnesian.</item><item>2. Of another at Thessalonica, by Isidorus the Abidene.</item><item>3. Of a <foreign xml:lang="grc">ἑλέπολις</foreign> (an apparatus used in
          besieging cities, see <bibl n="Vitr. 10.22">Vitr. 10.22</bibl>, and <hi rend="ital">Dict.
           of Ant. s. v.</hi>), made by Poseidonius of Macedon for Alexander the Great.</item><item>4. Of a <hi rend="ital">Sambuca</hi> (<hi rend="ital">Dict. of Ant. s. v.</hi>), made
          by Damius of Colophon.</item><item>5. Of a <foreign xml:lang="grc">γαστραφέτης</foreign> (an engine somewhat
          resembling a crossbow, and so named from the way in which it was held in order to stretch
          the string, see Hero Alexandrinus, <hi rend="ital">Belop. ap. Vet. Math.</hi> p. 125),
          made by Zopyrus of Tarentum at Miletus, and another by the same at Cumae in Italy.</item></list></p><p>Biton addresses this work to king Attalus, if at least the reading <foreign xml:lang="grc">ὦ Ἄτταλε</foreign> is to be adopted instead of <foreign xml:lang="grc">ὦ πάλαι</foreign> or <foreign xml:lang="grc">πάλλα</foreign> (near
        the beginning), and the emendation is said to be supported by a manuscript (Gale, <hi rend="ital">de Script. Mythol.</hi> p. 45); but whether Attalus, the 1st of Pergamus, who
        reigned <date when-custom="-241">B. C. 241</date>-<date when-custom="-197">197</date>, or one of the two
