By
      Pomponius (<bibl n="Dig. 1">Dig. 1</bibl>. tit. 2. s. 2.38) he is called <hi rend="ital">Publius</hi> Atilius, and in some manuscripts of Cicero (<hi rend="ital">Amic.</hi> 100.2),
      Acilius, not Atilius. He was among the earliest of the jurisconsults, after Coruncanius, who
      gave public instruction in law, and he was remarkable for his science <hi rend="ital">in
       profitendo.</hi> He was the first Roman who was called by the people <hi rend="ital">Sapiens,</hi> although, before his time, the jurist P. Sempronius (who was consul <date when-custom="-304">B. C. 304</date>) had acquired the cognomen <hi rend="ital">Sophus,</hi> less
      expressive to Latin ears. <hi rend="ital">Sapiens</hi> was afterwards a title frequently given
      to jurists. (<bibl n="Gel. 4.1">Gel. 4.1</bibl>.) He wrote Commentaries on the laws of the
      Twelve Tables. (Cic. <hi rend="ital">de Leg.</hi> 2.23; Heinec. <hi rend="ital">Hist. Jur.
