      Crixus, the leader of the runaway slaves, and killed 20,000 of his men, but was afterwards
      conquered by Spartacus. (<bibl n="Liv. Epit. 96">Liv. Epit. 96</bibl>.) In <date when-custom="_71">B. C. 71</date>, Arrius was to have succeeded Verres as propraetor in Sicily (<bibl n="Cic. Ver. 2.15">Cic. Ver. 2.15</bibl>, 4.20; Pseudo_Ascon. <hi rend="ital">in Cic.
       Div.</hi> p. 101, ed. Orelli), but died on his way to Sicily. (Schol. Gronov. <hi rend="ital">in Cic. Die.</hi> p. 383, ed. Orelli.) Cicero (<bibl n="Cic. Brut. 69">Cic. Brut. 69</bibl>)
      says, that Arrius was of low birth, and without learning or talent, but rose to honour by his
