      the 82nd Novell, on account of the excellent discharge of his legal duties as the assessor of
      Marcellus. On his appointment, <date when-custom="539">A. D. 539</date>, as <hi rend="ital">communis
       omnium,</hi> or <hi rend="ital">major judex,</hi> with jurisdiction next to the emperor's
      praefects (<foreign xml:lang="grc">ἄρχοντες</foreign>), he is said by Justinian to have
      acquired a high character, not only legal, but general. He was previously <hi rend="ital">ad
       vocates fisci,</hi> an office to which was attached the title <title>spectabilis.</title> His
