      of Alaric the second, king of the Visigoths, and employed in that capacity to authenticate
      with his subscription the official copies of the <hi rend="ital">Breviarium.</hi> (<hi rend="ital">Dict. of Ant. s. v.</hi> Breviariumn.) In his subscription he used the words <hi rend="ital">Anianus, vir spectabilis subscripsi et edidi,</hi> and it is probable that, from
      a misunderstanding of the word <hi rend="ital">edidi,</hi> proceeded the common notion that he
      was the author of the Romano-Gothic code, which has thence sometimes been called <hi rend="ital">Breviarium Aniani.</hi> The subscription took place at Aire (<hi rend="ital">Aduris</hi>) in Gascoigne, <date when-custom="506">A. D. 506</date>. (Silberrad, <hi rend="ital">ad Heinec. Hist. Jur. Germ.</hi> § 15.) Sigebert (<hi rend="ital">de ecclesiasticis
       scriptoribus,</hi> 100.70, cited by Jac. Godefroi, <hi rend="ital">Prolegomeona in Cod.
       Theodos.</hi> § 5) says, that Anianlus translated from Greek into Latin the work of
