      nobleman and courtier (S. Epiph. <hi rend="ital">ad v. Hacr.</hi> 64. [44] § 3)
      flourished <date when-custom="230">A. D. 230</date>. At first a Valentinian (<bibl n="Euseb. Hist. Eccl. 7.18">Euseb. Hist. Eccl. 7.18</bibl>) and Marcionist, he was won to the
      faith by Origen, whose constant fellow-student he became (Origen, <hi rend="ital">Ep. ad
       African.</hi> vol. i. p. 29), and was ordained deacon. (S. Hier. <hi rend="ital">Vir.
       Illustr.</hi> 56.) He plied Origen with questions, and urged him to write his Commentaries
       (<foreign xml:lang="grc">ἐργοδιώκτης</foreign>), supplying him with transcribers in
      abundance. He shone as a Confessor during the persecution of Julius Maximinus (Euseb. 6.18)
       <date when-custom="236">A. D. 236</date>, and died between A. D. 247 and 253. His letters to Origen
      (praised by St. Jerome) are lost; part of one exists ap. Origen, <hi rend="ital">Lib. de
       Orat.</hi> 100.5. p. 208, <hi rend="smallcaps">A. B.</hi> (See Routh's <hi rend="ital">Reliquiae Sacr.</hi> ii. p. 367.) Origen dedicated to him his <title xml:lang="la">Exhortation to Martyrdom; Books against Celsus; Commentary on St. John's Gospel ;</title>
      and <hi rend="ital">On Prayer.</hi>
