venerat, non suscepit. Vis causam scire ? Cognosce : Joannis
baptisma videbatur, Christi baptLsmus invLsibihs erat. &gt; Ego enim &lt;,

confitebantur vitia sua atque peccata, suscipiebat, sic stabit in

εὐαγγέλιον ἐκδεδωκέναι τοῖς ἐκ περιτομῆς πιστεύσασι· τοσοῦτον, φησίν,
ἐστὶν ἐμοῦ ἰσχυρότερος ὁ μετ᾿ ἐμὲ ἐρχόμενος, ὡς μηδὲ τὰ τῆς περιβολῆς

ὥστε καὶ τοὺς τυχόντας νοεῖν αὐτὰ δύνασθαι, ἱκανόν με τυγχάνειν βαστάσαι,
μηδὲ ταῦτα ὑπομένοντα φέρειν· εἰ δὲ ἐγὼ ὁ ὑπὸ τοῦ κυρίου
μαρτυρηθείς, ὡς ἄρα μείζων ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν &lt; οὐδεὶς ἐμοῦ τυγχάνει,
οὐδὲ τὰ ὑποδήματα βαστάσαι ἱκανός εἰμι, τί λεκτέον περὶ τῶν

ὅλου ὑφαντὸν( τυγχάνειν καταλαβεῖν, ὃν ἔχει λόγον; Ἔτερον μέν οὖν τό·
βαστάζειν τὰ δήματα &lt;, δηλονότι ἤδη λελυμένα απὸ τῶν τοῦ ὑποδεδεμένου
ποδῶν, τὸ παρὰ τῷ Ματθαίῳ, ἕτερον δέ τό· κύψαντα λῦσαι τὸν

καιροὺς εἰρηκέναι τὸν βαπτιστὴν καθ’ ἕτερον καὶ ἕτερον κινούμενον
νοῦν. Μέγα μὲν οὖν τὸ βαστάσαι τὰ Ἰησοῦ ὑποδήματα, μέγα δέ καὶ
τὸ ἐπὶ τὰ σωματικὰ αὐτοῦ κάτω που γινόμενα κύψαντα, ὑπέρ τοῦ τὴν

τυγχάνοντα — εἷς γὰρ ὁ τῆς ἀσαφείας δεσμός, ὥσπερ καὶ μία ἡ τῆς γνώσε-
ως καλείς — ἅτινα οὐδ’ ὁ &gt; μείζων ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν &lt; καθ’ αὑτὸν
ἱκανὸς λῦσαι ἢ ἀνοῖξαι, τοῦ δήσαντος καὶ κλείσαντος μόνου δωρουμένου,

ἀναλαμβάνει ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ υἱός, τὸ ἕτερον εἶναι τῶν ὑποδημάτων, τὴν

κατ' ἀξίαν ἀμφοτέρων τῶν ἐπιδημιῶν τοὺς λόγους παραστῆσαι
δυνάμενος τὸν ἱμάντα λύειν τῶν Ἰησοῦ ἱκανός ἐστιν ὑποδημάτων,
