A Dictionary of Greek and Roman biography and mythology

(Πέριλλος ; the form Περίλαος in Lucian, Phal. l, and the Scholiast to Pindar, Pind. P. 1.185, probably arises from a confusion of A with A), a statuary, was the maker of the bronze hull of the tyrant Phalaris, respecting wlich see further under PHALARIS. Of the modern disquisitionsonr this instrument of torture, the most important are those of Göller (De Situ et Orig. Syracus. pp. 272, &c.) and Böttiger (Kunstmythologie, vol. i. p. 380). Müller places the artist at ol, 55, B. C. 560. Like the makers of other instruments of death, Perillus is said to have become one of the victims of his own handiwork.
