2. A son of Anchialus, king of the Taphians north of Ithaca. He was connected by ties of hospitality with the house of Odysseus. When Athena visited Telemachus, she assumed the personal appearance of Mentes. (Hom. Od. 1.105, 181, &c.; Strab. x. p.456.)
