the goddess of light, or rather the goddess that brings to light, and hence the goddess that presides over the birth of children; it was therefore used as a surname of Juno and Diana, and the two are sometimes called Lucinae. (Varro, de Ling. Lat. 5.69; Catull. 34.13; Horat. Carm. Saec. 14, &c.; Ov. Fast. 2.441, &c., 6.39; Tib. 3.4. 13.) When women of rank gave birth to a son, a lectisterniumn was prepared for Juno Lucina in the atrium of the house. (Serv. and Philarg. ad Virg. Eclog. 4.63.)
