A Dictionary of Greek and Roman biography and mythology

(Ἀρχύτας), of AMPHISSA, a Greek poet, who was probably a contemporary of Euphorion, about B. C. 300, since it was a matter of doubt with the ancients themselves whether the epic poem Γέρανος was the work of Archytas or Euphorion. (Athen. 3.82.) Plutarch (Quaest. Gr. 15) quotes from him an hexameter verse concerning the country of the Ozolian Locrians. Two other lines, which he is said to have inserted in the Hermes of Eratosthenes, are preserved in Stobaeus. (Serrn. 58.10.) He seems to have been the same person whom Laertius (8.82) calls an epigrammatist, and upon whom Bion wrote an epigram which he quotes. (4.52.)
