Eclogues

Virgil

Vergil. The Poems of Vergil. Rhoades, James, translator. London: Oxford University Press, 1921.

  1. With these full oft have I seen Moeris change
  2. to a wolf's form, and hide him in the woods,
  3. oft summon spirits from the tomb's recess,
  4. and to new fields transport the standing corn.
  5. Take ashes, Amaryllis, fetch them forth,
  6. and o'er your head into the running brook
  7. fling them, nor look behind: with these will
  8. upon the heart of Daphnis make essay.
  9. Nothing for gods, nothing for songs cares he.
  10. Look, look I the very embers of themselves
  11. have caught the altar with a flickering flame,
  12. while I delay to fetch them: may the sign
  13. prove lucky! something it must mean, for sure,
  14. and Hylax on the threshold 'gins to bark!
  15. May we believe it, or are lovers still
  16. by their own fancies fooled?
