         <forename full="yes">Joannes</forename></persName></label></head><p>(<label xml:lang="grc">Ἰωάννης Βαρβουκάλλος</label>), the author of eleven epigrams
      in the Greek Anthology. From internal evidence his date is fixed by Jacobs about <date when-custom="551">A. D. 551</date>. The Scholiast derives his name from Barbucale, a city of Spain
      within the Ebro mentioned by Polybius and Stephanus. The name of the city as actually given by
      Polybius (<bibl n="Plb. 3.14">3.14</bibl>), Stephanus Byzantinus (<hi rend="ital">s. v.</hi>),
      and Livy (<bibl n="Liv. 21.5">21.5</bibl>), is Arbucale (<foreign xml:lang="grc">Ἀρβουκάλη</foreign>) or Arbocala, probably the modern Albucella. </p><byline>[<ref target="author.P.S">P.S</ref>]</byline></div></div></body></text></TEI>
